Reflexology – More than just a foot massage!

Reflexology foot chart

What do you think of when you hear the word Reflexology? Did you know that it can do wonders for your mental and physical health as well as being a fantastic form of foot massage? Did you know it can provide a full body detox? No? Well read on to find out more!

What is Reflexology? Reflexology actually has roots in Ancient Egypt and China but was “re-discovered” in the UK and South Africa more recently. All the body’s systems and organs are mapped out on the feet (and hands too for Reflexology hand massage). By applying pressure to these points and using specific massage techniques the energy flow to the corresponding organ is increased resulting in enhanced health. When you get sick it means that body system is either congested or depleted and a Reflexologist is able to feel that during the foot massage treatment. Pretty amazing don’t you think?!

What can Reflexology help you with? Reflexology might only work on the feet but it accesses your whole body and mind. It can help treat:

  • Digestive complaints
  • Female repro issues
  • Infertility
  • Insomnia
  • Stress and Anxiety
  • Headaches
  • Ears, nose and throat conditions
  • Asthma
  • Stiff spine
  • And so much more!

What happens in a Reflexology treatment? The whole treatment lasts for 60 minutes with extra time allowed at the beginning to go through a detailed consultation form. You will be lying down for the treatment with just your lower legs and feet uncovered. Your neck, lower back and knees will be supported during the treatment to enable full relaxation. The treatment starts with a foot massage to warm up the feet, followed by specific pressure techniques on all the reflex points and finally finishes with a relaxing foot massage.

Sourdough Bread – Make your gut happy!

Sourdough bread

Yesterday I discovered this delicious homemade sourdough bread made by a local baker “David the Baker” and I wanted to share the wonders of sourdough with you.

You’ve probably heard of sourdough bread, maybe tried some or maybe already know everything about it and make your own! Fermented foods seem to be being talked about a lot lately and the benefits of fermented foods too. Did you know that sourdough is a fermented food? The fermentation process creates biochemical changes within the food causing it to have a multitude of benefits on our health.

Here are some of the benefits of sourdough bread:

  • It’s low GI, glycemic index, so it doesn’t create the spikes and consequently the troughs in blood sugar levels
  • Contains the all important bacteria Lactobacillus which once it reaches your gut helps your body to fight off any harmful bacteria in there. Lactobacillus also increases the formation of lactic acid in the bread which helps make the micronutrients in the bread more readily available. This is where that distinct sour taste comes from!
  • It contains less phytic acid than regular bread. Phytic acid binds to minerals in grains making it hard for your body to absorb them, especially if your digestive system is weak
  • Due to the longer prep time for sourdough bread than regular bread some of the gluten is broken down into amino acids making it easier to digest
  • No need for preservatives! Sourdough bread contains acetic acid which is a natural mold inhibitor
  • And last but not least it’s fantastic micronutrient profile; B vitamins, folate, vitamin E, selenium, iron, manganese, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc
